Jonathan honours Mike Adenuga with GCON
The chairman of Globacom, Otunba Mike Adenuga has been named a recipient of this year’s honour of Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON) title. The billionaire will be the second businessman to hold such title after Aliko Dangote of Dangote Group of companies.
Last year, President Goodluck Jonathan came under heavy criticism for giving the GCON title to Dangote. In history,no businessman has been so honoured. The GCON title was an exclusive preserve of top government functionaries such as the Chief Justice of the federation, the Vice President and top military chiefs.
Adenuga, a wealthy Nigerian with mention in Forbes Richest Billionaires in the world list, will lead 148 others to the national honour ceremony this september.Hardly seen at any social or political event, Adenuga is a big player in Nigerian telecom, banking, property, oil and gas business.
Adenuga also hardly make public speeches but this time, he would likely be on the rostrum speaking on behalf of the awardees durning the presentation of the national honours at state house in Abuja.
