ABUJA—The Senate has said the Federal Government cannot disburse the N4billion currently needed by the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, as the institution is state-owned.
At the plenary yesterday, the lawmakers stated that Oyo and Osun States, who jointly own the institution, should resolve the crisis bedevilling the school.
They pointed out that the Federal Government could only invest in capital projects in the institution and not spend on payment of salaries and allowances of workers.
The resolutions of the Senate were sequel to a motion by Senator Buhari Abdulfatai, APC, Oyo North and co- sponsored by 40 other Senators and entitled, “Urgent need for the Federal Government to intervene in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology imbroglio in order to save the future of the innocent youths.”
In their contributions, Senators Olugbenga Ashafa (APC Lagos East), Monsurat Sunmonu (APC Oyo Central), Jibrin Barau (APC Kano North) and Babajide Omoworare (APC Osun East) stressed the need for the federal government to provide lifeline for the university so as to further promote science and technology in the country.
In his remarks, Senate President Bukola Saraki urged the Oyo and Osun States to save the students’ future by urgently resolving the problem that led to the prolong strike.
