LAGOS—An accident involving four vehicles occurred along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos, yesterday, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
Vanguard gathered that one of the vehicles, a tipper-lorry, loaded with gravel which was coming from Oshodi end, rammed into the rear of another lorry loaded with vegetable oil at Ilasa Bus Stop.
Drivers of both vehicles were severely injured, while the conductors in the lorry conveying gravel were trapped because it fell on its side. Time was 3a.m.
Policemen from Ilasa Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, SP Oriyomi Titilayo, who got to the scene, succeeded in rescuing the trapped victims.
Vanguard gathered that a Lagos State Ambulance Services, LASAMBUS, team got to the scene one hour later and took the injured persons to the hospital.
However, as the policemen were trying to control motorists plying the highway in the early hours of the day, a truck, said to be speeding, ignored the traffic signal, rammed into a commercial bus with number plates BDG 750 XQ, which had slowed down to avoid running into the wreckage of the lorries.
The impact, it was learned, made the bus to somersault, with the bus conductor flung out. He died on the spot, while other passengers sustained various degrees of injuries.
Among the passengers was a policeman, who had a fracture in the leg.
The second crash worsened the gridlock. Policemen managed motorists into alternative routes through adjoining streets.
Officials of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, got to the scene at about 5a.m. Those from the Lagos State Fire Service, who were at the scene when the incident occurred, succeeded in washing the oil off the road.
Evacuation of the wreckage of the vehicles and clean up lasted until 10.30a.m.
