BENIN—Edo State Government, yesterday, mourned the demise of Supreme Court justice and the Obaseki of Benin Kingdom, Justice Andrew Obaseki (retd.), describing his death as a great loss to the state and the nation as a whole.

Justice Obaseki, who was also the head of the Obaseki family of Benin and the Diaspora and also an uncle to the incumbent governor of the state, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, died aged 93 last Thursday.

In a condolence letter by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Osarodion Ogie, it recalled with “nostalgia the remarkable judicial career of Justice Obaseki, which started in Benin and culminated at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“While we mourn his passing, we are consoled by the inspiring message of the distinguished service which his life exemplified. We also celebrate the fact that Justice Obaseki lived long enough to see his family continue its record of distinguished public service by producing the current governor of our state, Godwin Obaseki.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Obaseki family and we are certain that at the appro-priate time, the entirety of our polity will rise to celebrate the passing of a distinguished superstar, whose memory will remain in our hearts as a treasure and inspiration.”
