UGHELLI-THREE persons including a 23 years old boy, were Saturday crushed to death by Dangote truck after it allegedly failed breake by the Army checkpoint at Ekrerhavwen junction, Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State and rammed into over 12 cars.
The accident, which involved a Toyota Tunderer, Pathfinder, Volkswagen Veto and other cars, occurred at about 2pm,
The Dangote truck pushed the Tunderer and its occupants, including a United States of America based Nigerian, Mr Akpobome Michael Egi.
An eyewitness who gave the name of the hawker as Otubure Uyosue, told Vanguard that the three other persons who sustained fatal injuries were rushed to the hospital, adding that the hawker was found dead under the Dangote truck.
The eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, said two out of the three persons rushed for medical attention later died at the hospital, lamenting that both the driver and the conductor of the Dangote fled the accident scene before they could be apprehended.
Lamenting the source said that the deceased left secondary School last year, and that the corpse of the 23 years old hawker has been deposited at Agbarho central hospital mortuary. The source added that they have reported the matter to the police.
As at the time of filing this report, the Dangote truck and the Tunderer were still at the scene of the accident as other cars involved have been removed.
Our correspondent reports that the cements in the Dangote truck had been transferred into another Dangote truck for onward delivery to their client(s).
Narrating his experience, Mr Akpobome Michael Egi said he was held by traffic at the Army checkpoint heading towards Ughelli when he was brushed by the Dangote truck from behind.
Lamenting that he was like a squatting Duck, Egi said “I was watching helplessly as the truck crushed and pushed my Toyota Tunderer into the bush. I struggled to come out of the car after it was stopped by a hill with my car serving as a wedge to the killer Dangote truck”.
Continuing, he said over 12 cars were involved in the fatal accident, adding that “a hawker died on the spot, while three other persons in critical conditions were rushed to the hospital.
While threatening to sue Dangote company, he urged the Federal Government and the Army authority to find solution to the incessant traffic grid being caused by the Checkpoint.
