Attack root cause of kidnapping, cleric charges Govt

A Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Mike Omojola on Saturday in Akure advised the Federal Government to tackle the root cause of kidnapping in the country.

Omojola, a Lecturer at All Saints Major Seminary, who gave the advice in an interview with newsmen, said once this was done, incidences of kidnapping would reduce.

He was speaking on the side-lines of the presentation of three books by a Priest of Catholic Diocese of Ondo, Rev. Fr Anthony Afariogun, Omojola.

He said that lack of planning and unemployment causes of unrest among the youths.

He described the trend of kidnapping in the country, especially of catholic priests as challenging.

“The development is challenging not because it involved priests but that the kidnappers have seen it as a source of income.

“They think they have gotten a job by kidnapping people therefore; we should attack the root cause of the menace.
“It was not like that in the time past, it has degenerated to kidnapping even the priests and the religious,’’ Omojola said.

The cleric said that any nation that did not care for its teeming population would likely fall into such crisis.

“Any nation that cannot care about the poor, cannot protect the few rich; this is the state we have found ourselves,’’ he said.

Earlier, at the Mass of Thanksgiving to present the three books and to celebrate the golden Jubilee birthday of jAfariogun, he urged Nigerians to be grateful for the gift of life.

The books were titled: God of Mercy and Love; Harvest and Thanksgiving: Joy and Blessing from God; and New trends in Educational Administration and Planning.

Omojola said the celebrator was kidnapped six years ago by some armed robbers and he survived it, adding that the grace and mercy of God had kept him in the past 50 years.

“Let thanksgiving be your sacrifice because God wants you to appreciate Him so your life should be life of gratitude to God always.

“Life is a gift from birth and 50 years is a lot of years in Nigeria to celebrate,’’ he said.

Omojola advised the priest to continue to be generous, prayerful and committed to his calling as a priest till the end of his life.
