Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura of Nasarawa State, has disclosed that he hustled a lot, including hawking Madidi (a delicacy in Nasarawa), to be where he is at the moment.
Governor Al-makura, disclosed this Wednesday in Lafia during an elaborate birthday colloquium organized by the First Eighteen Commissioners during his first tenure in office.
The governor who noted that it is not in his habit to celebrate his birthday with pop and pageantry, thanked the organizers of the birthday in his honour.
The governor who gave a brief account of his life from childhood to the movement also disclosed that there is nothing special about him.
“There is nothing special about Tanko Al-makura, if anything, Tanko Almakura is an odd person, because right from the circumstances of my birth, I have always come in an un-usual way through out my life”.
”In the line of birth even apart from my big brother who is the Sarkin Kwandare, who is the first man, all the women that came after him, about ten and by accident of circumstance Tanko was borna.
“Not only that, when I went to primary school and children were spending seven years, I spent ten years, this is unusual. At the age of twelve when my friends had gone to secondary schools, I just found myself in Teachers College and within a class of thirty five, I was a the youngest”.
“The advanced teachers college I went was in south Eastern state, that was shortly after the Nigerian Civil War, when nobody wanted to dare go to the east, this is something odd about me”.
“When it come to the party I wanted to flag my flag in PDP but I was chased out, I went and found solace in the then Congress For Progressive Change (CPC), that was the only party that came on board in Nigeria and I was the only CPC candidate to be a governor of a state in Nigeria, I was the first and the last, because there was no CPC again, this is something odd”.
“If you look at the governors in Nigeria, it is only Tanko Almakura that cannot hear when thing are being said, except if he wears his hearing aid, so to me, I see this as a message from God and I accept it as the wish of God for me to be this odd, right from birth” he said.
The governor who called on the disabled in the society not to be discourage, pledged to explore all opportunity at his disposal to help the disable persons in the society.
Earlier, the governor took time to celebrate with pupils of Lafia East primary School and Ta’al Model primary school Bukan Sidi, where he taught them in the class and told them to learn hard to become leaders of tomorrow.
Others who speak at the occasion were the Retired Justice Suleiman Galadima, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the State Deputy Governor Silas Ali Agara and Seven of the First set of Commissioners, who all euelogised the governor and congratulated him on his birthday.
