ABUJA-A former chairman, Board of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) and erstwhile Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George has said the party needs an experienced man to lead the party to the next general election.
George who is one of the contenders for the office of PDP national chairman stated this yesterday shortly after obtaining his expression of interest and nomination forms at Wadata Plaza, national secretariat of the party, saying fielding a chairman who would receive just N1 million and compromise later would spell doom for the PDP in 2019.
He further explained that the party needed someone that is dogged, bold and a tested captain who would dare the ruling party and damn the consequence, noting that only a man who understands the party’s written and unwritten laws is good enough for this “critical times.”
He said: “We don’t have the time for trial now. We need those who know the constitution of the party; those who have the courage and experience. After the convention, we shall be having a general election. Do you want those who do not have the experience to lead the party to 2019 general elections?
“All we can do is to market what we have done in the past and we also need a chairman that will avoid the mistakes, pitfalls of the past. So let’s do what is just, right and equitable. Nigerians want the PDP back,” stressing that a chairman who would be satisfied with financial remuneration without working tirelessly for the party is not what the PDP requires ahead of 2019.
“This country needs a vibrant opposition party. So we don’t need a chairman who will take just N1 million and go to bed to sleep. In December, we shall confirm to Nigerians whether we are ready for 2019 or not,” he said.
On the need to give the younger aspirants in the race a chance; the retired Navy Commodore elicited a prolonged laughter from journalists when he described his grey hairs as a “bank account,” an evidence of his wealth of ideas to reposition the party.
“Can we afford to have someone who has no experience, who has never been in charge of the party affairs to lead us this time?” he asked rhetorically.
